Often parents and kids are worried about choosing a career, which is very natural as education and aptitude plays a vital role in building it. But mainly it is difficult on determining first which stream to choose. Of course there are assessments like DMIT and Aptitude Test that guides one with the same. Once one realises their aptitude and strengths, next is opting for a stream. Amongst the three major streams Commerce, Humanities and Science; science is the most favourable field across the country as it offers a variety of options in the course, especially the most prestigious ones like of Doctors and Engineers.
In science stream, students are asked to choose from Group A (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics) or Group B (Physics, Chemistry, Biology) along with English. Of course individual interests and aptitude comes into play here as well. Students who desire to take Engineering has to choose PCM and those who desire to study Medical sciences have to choose PCB. But not everyone aspires to become an Engineer or a Doctor. So again for them the question arises what next? So here we are to help you with few other options in the field of science for those who wish to do something different!
1. B.Sc, B.Sc (Hons)
The students who wish to continue with the traditional science field can go for the B.Sc or B.Sc (Hons) degree after 12th (Science) by taking any subject as the major subject. Numerous colleges offer specialization in major subjects like Chemistry, Mathematics, Zoology, Botany, Geology, Physics and Statistics. Depending on the aptitudes and strengths, you can choose from a diversity of options. Once you have done your graduation, you can also opt for Masters degree (M.Sc) and further do their Ph.D in that particular subject. There are job opportunities after graduation too, you may choose the career in scientific research, banking, teaching, chemist, analyst, biologist, zoologist and management. After the completion of this course, there are various job opportunities in both private and government sectors.

A combination of logical and visual aptitude suits this profession. This programme has vast sea of opportunities. Pharmacists dispense prescription medications to patients and offer expertise in the safe use of prescriptions. They also may conduct health and wellness screenings, provide immunizations, oversee the medications given to patients, and provide advice on healthy lifestyles This course involves the subjects like chemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, drugs indication & contraindication, chemical structure, new drugs development, formulations, analysis of chemical and drugs, pharmaceutical marketing and, handling and calibration of the instruments uses in pharmaceutical and research & development.
3. Naturopathy & Yogic Science
Naturopathy & Yogic Science is one of the trusted fields after Allopathy in India. It is the oldest method for cure and prevention of diseases in the world. At present, it is not only popular in India but also growing rapidly across the world. One can make career in Naturopathy and Yoga by securing a Bachelor of Naturopathy and Yogic Sciences (B.N.Y.S) and then practice as a physician after passing 12th standards from Biology, Chemistry and Physics. There are many medical colleges of Naturopathy & Yoga in India. The scope of BNYS physicians is available both within and outside the country. The degree in Naturopathy & Yogic Science is an approved educational programme in India. The study involves the use of medical treatment by using natural substances and herbal medicines.
4. Dairy Technology
Dairy Technology is the separate branch after 12th science. It is a big field of educational study. It covers the technology that is used in the production, manufacturing, quality analysis, and research of dairy products. A graduate in dairy technology has the opportunity to work in dairy industries like Amul, Parag, Param, Mother Dairy and other food industries. The other advantage of this course is that, it helps an individual in establishing his/ her own business. Dairy Technology is an engineering field that deals with the processing of milk and its products. This field involves the use of ‘Technology’ to make the dairy products and processing more advanced, hi-tech and useful.
Biotechnology is the emerging field of science. It is one of the rapidly growing field that uses both biology and technology to develop the highly advanced medical products like drugs, medicines and medical devices. Thus, it requires a good balance of logical, vusal and clerical processing aptitude. Biotechnology is responsible for many of the things that make our lives better. The field focuses on the intersection of biology and technology, leading to a vast array of new products that are designed to enrich lives, make day-to-day living easier, and make us healthier.. This guide focuses on the various biotechnology degrees, jobs and expectations for those who are interested in the field. It is the technical & biological combined process to understand, develop, diagnose and research the diseases and medicines. It is a respectable and responsible job oriented field. Ones can go for the food & beverages industries, animal husbandry agriculture industries and even genetic research after the completion of the course. From vaccine production to genetic modification, biotechnology is everywhere- and as a result, biotechnology careers are quite promising for new graduates.
Oceanography is the study of the ocean and all its complex relationships with the planet. This includes the study of weather, ocean currents, and sea life, and every other topic associated with the ocean. An oceanographer is a special kind of scientist who studies the ocean. The oceans are a large environment, and so the science of oceanography is just as large. Oceanographers study every different aspect of the ocean, such as the chemistry of the of ocean water, the geology associated with the ocean, the physical movements of the ocean water and even the life that calls the ocean its home.
Sericulture means silk farming. Sericulture is the art and technology of raising silkworms which are meant for production of raw silk yarn. People with an observant mind and visual aptitude can take this up. Sericulture mostly needs less investment, a very small land holding and gives higher returns. It provides better career options to the job seekers and entrepreneurs. In India where agriculture being most of the occupation of majority of population residing in the countryside, sericulture proves to be a growing field. Opportunities for sericulture in academic fields by completing M.Sc (Sericulture)/B.Sc in Silk Technology can apply for Lecturers, Instructors, Lab Assistant, etc in Sericulture. Along with this other opportunities are in Development Officer in State/ District Khadi Board. There are various posts in Central government agencies like Central Export Promotion Council/ NABARD/ Krishi Vigyan Kendra/ Silk Board, etc.
Microbiologists study microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, algae, fungi, and some types of parasites. They try to understand how these organisms live, grow, and interact with their environments. Microbiology overlaps the various other degree areas of biology like as molecular biology, genetics & immunology. Microbiologists are the scientists, those study organisms & infectious agents which cannot be seen with the unprotected eye. They study the interactions of microorganisms with other organisms & humans, which exist & affect our lives. The scope of Microbiology is huge because of the involvement of microbiology in various fields such as Pharmacy, Medicine, Clinical research, Agriculture, Dairy Industry, Water industry, Nanotechnology & Chemical technology.
9. Food Science and Technology
Food science is the branch of applied sciences that combines the fundamentals of biochemistry, physical sciences and chemical engineering to study the physical, chemical and biological nature of food items. In simple words, food science (or food technology) deals with the manufacturing, processing, treatment, preservation, and distribution of food. The ultimate objective of food science is to understand the principles of food processing and to improve the food quality for the general public. Whatever food item (especially packaged ones) you come across in the supermarket (or retail store), has had some contributions from a food scientist, food technologist or food engineer. Food Science involves chemistry (organic, inorganic and physical), biochemistry, microbiology, nutrition, chemical and process engineering. The holy grail of food science lies within the understanding of the chemistry and biochemistry of food components like proteins, carbohydrate, fats, minerals, vitamins and water. So, the field needs highly qualified and trained Food Scientists.
Zoology is that branch of science which deals with the study of the animal kingdom. The branch deals with the structure, embryology, evolution, classification, habits, and distribution of all animals, both living and extinct. For someone who is interested in making a career in Zoology will be required to deal with both the existing, dead and quite possible the extinct species of the animal kingdom. There are several specializations that the students pursuing the field can venture into. There are physiologists that study the metabolic processes of animals, then there are taxonomists who deal with the naming and the classification of the animal species, one can think of becoming embryologist whose only job is to study and focus on the early stages of the animal life. So similarly there are many such options that one can venture into depending on his / her capabilities and interests. On choosing this career, the person specializing in the field will be referred to as a zoologist. On being a part of this field, one will be carefully have to study the behavior, characteristics, evolutionary trends of the different species of animals and those factors having a direct impact on them.
These are few options students can look into apart from being an Engineer or a Doctor. But again it is advised that the career they choose must be in accordance with their love in that particular subject, their general knowledge about it, their aptitude and their personal choice. Brainwonders is one of the largest assessment and counselling centre that provides career counselling and professional guidance services on the basis of the individual’s strengths and personality and also directs the students about the developments that needs to be inculcated for their success! The students can then follow their dreams with zeal and determination.
