Bachelor of Dental Surgery

BDS or is a five-year undergraduate course for students who have an interest in dental Science. After MBBS, BDS is one of the most popular courses in India. 

The students in their final years are required to do a mandatory paid internship, and they have to take at least 2 to 3 rotations in various departments.

During the five years, subjects like oral pathology, dental hygiene, dental histology, Public Health, dentistry, etc., are taught to the students. 

The degree is regulated by Dental Council Of India (DCI). Indian students must qualify their 12th board exams or have an equivalent degree with at least 85% from a recognized Institute. 

Students can then pursue their careers as a dentist in a medical firm, or they can choose to study further for masters in dental surgery.

Is BDS equivalent to MBBS?

The BDS course focuses on the dental aspect of human anatomy and the rehabilitation and treatment of the same. It confers on the graduate the title of Doctor, just like MBBS. While it doesn't have the same respect or job opportunities as an MBBS, BDS is better than an MBBS without specializations.

Eligibility Criteria for BDS:

  • The candidate must have passed class 12th with a minimum aggregate of 50% from the biology stream. 
  • After that, the student must appear in the NEET examination and clear the cutoff exam for admission. 
  • If students manage to qualify for the entrance exam, they need to appear for counselling sessions that different colleges organize.

Admission Process for BDS:
  • Admission to BDS generally occurs through the national-level NEET exam conducted across the country.
  • To be eligible for exams, the students must have passed a class 12th with an aggregate of at least 50%. 
  • After that, the students have to appear for the NEET exam, and they can enter the admission process only if their scores are higher than the cutoff marks. 
  • After they clear the cutoff exams, they can prepare for the counselling round.
BDS Entrance Exam: 
  • The national-level NEET is the only exam conducted for admission to the BDS program.
  • Aspiring candidates may register on the official website of NTA and fill in their details.
  • After filling in the personal details, the admit cards will be sent to the students via their registered email.
  • The applicants are then requested to appear for the exam, and if they score higher than the cutoff set by the exam, they may proceed to the counselling round held for admissions to a college. 
  • Neet is a mandatory exam for undergraduate medical courses like MBBS, BDS, BAMS, BSc nursing, etc.
