Why and When is Hindi Diwas celebrated?

hindi diwas

On every 14th of September, Hindi Diwas is celebrated to spread awareness about the importance of the Hindi language.

In the most spoken languages of the world, Hindi stands in the 4th position after  English, Spanish and Mandarin. A special day is commemorated to honour the acceptance of Hindi in the Devnagari script as one of India's official languages in several Hindi-speaking states.

In India, it is one of the most widely spoken languages. Most of the northern region of the country also celebrates the language as their mother tongue

History and significance of Hindi Diwas :

The Constituent Assembly of India chose Hindi as one of the official languages of the Republic of India, thanks to the efforts of Beohar Rajendra Simha, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Kaka Kalelkar, Maithili Sharan Gupt, and Seth Govind Das on 14th September 1949. Since then, Hindi Diwas is celebrated in honour of this day.

Beohar Rajendra Simha celebrated his 50th birthday on September 14, 1949, when his efforts resulted in the establishment of Hindi as an official language and Hindi Diwas was observed for the first time.

Hindi Diwas that is celebrated on 14th September is a means of reminding young people of their roots. No matter where we go, we must stay grounded and in tune with our roots. Every year, this day serves as a reminder of our actual identity and brings us closer to our country's people. This day of celebrating Hindi Diwas serves as a reminder that we must protect culture and values.

How is the National Hindi Diwas different from world Hindi Day?

Every year on January 10th, World Hindi Day is observed to commemorate the inauguration of the World Hindi Conference which took place in 1975. This day is also known as Vishwa Hindi Diwas. Then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi opened the first World Hindi Conference. However,  National Hindi Diwas is celebrated on 14th September to commemorate the acceptance of Hindi as one of India's official languages.

Languages act as barriers as well as the main connecting link depending on the regions.  With current globalization, languages have become a means of connection now more than ever. With the current technology leading to the world coming closer, languages act as a major factor in blurring the boundaries and bringing the world closer. India is a multilingual country with over 1650 different languages, each with its own culture and traditions. Twenty-two of these languages has been designated as official languages, while six have been designated as classical languages (Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Odia and Sanskrit).

Hindi is our country's ancient and enriched language.  However, the English language is currently more popular in terms of the official language of work.  Speaking English is regarded as a symbol of respect and a sign of modernism in our country. But, according to experts, children learn very quickly in their mother tongue.

While the globally popular language is a necessity, knowing our country’s own languages is also a need of the hour. There is a famous phenomenon known as "Hindi imposition." There have been numerous debates, thoughts and disputes over this on some of the most popular news networks and portals. The controversy is related to the imposition of the Hindi language on the entire nation. Which is protested by many states including majorly southern states of the country.

Hindi continues to grow as one of the most popular languages:

On this National Hindi Diwas, let us look at how Hindi is growing as one of the most popular languages. Even as protests against the imposition of Hindi and the imposition of Hindi as a national language become louder, Hindi continues to spread at a faster rate in Indian history.

The primary reason for the increase in Hindi is simple: population growth. The Hindi belt of India has some of the world's highest birthrate, whereas the corresponding figure in the South (as well as West Bengal and Maharashtra) is comparable to developed countries grappling with population decline.

As a result, the number of Indians who identify Hindi as their first language is rapidly increasing. One aspect of the dynamic is the growth of Hindi in its home region. However, the fact that Hindi is growing geographically is much more intriguing.

The number of Hindi native speakers in South India roughly doubled between 1991 and 2011. This is even though the overall population of these states has only increased by 28%.
