About JEE Main

JEE Main is a standardized examination administered across various states in India, serving as an undergraduate-level test for admission to top engineering and technical institutions, whether government-funded or privately owned.

JEE Main 2024 caters to three distinct groups of candidates:

  • Paper 1 is intended for students aspiring to pursue B.E. or B. Tech. Courses.
  • Paper 2A is designed for students with aspirations to pursue a B. Arch. Course.
  • Paper 2B is tailored for students interested in a B. Planning course.

The JEE Main 2024 will be conducted in two sessions, one in January and another in April.

The questions featured in the JEE Main predominantly draw from NCERT materials. However, the examination is renowned for including challenging questions aimed at assessing candidates' comprehension of concepts and analytical skills.

Important Conditions and Latest Changes in JEE Main 2024

  • The number of sessions for JEE Main 2024 will remain consistent with JEE Main 2022, comprising two sessions in April and May. Negative markings will apply to sections A (Multiple-Choice Questions) and B (numerical value questions).
  • Candidates are required to download and install the SANDES app on their smartphones, serving as an additional channel for receiving notifications from the NTA.
  • The application process has been modified to facilitate candidates in filling out the form more conveniently, breaking it into smaller sections. Initially, during the exam registration, only Session 1 will be visible, and candidates can select it. Registration for Session 2 will open at a later stage.
  • In the JEE Main 2024 application form, a mandatory field has been added to provide the family's annual income, including the father's or guardian's yearly gross income, the mother's gross annual income, and the parent's annual income from other sources, if applicable.
  • The selection of exam cities will be determined based on the permanent and present addresses provided during registration. Additionally, candidates must input the OTPs received at their registered mobile number or email address before submitting the application fees during the registration process.

JEE Main Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for JEE Main 2024 outline the terms and conditions that aspirants must meet to qualify for the exam. Age Limit: While there is no specific age limit for JEE Main exam candidates, it's important to note that individual IITs may establish age criteria for admissions, with details typically outlined in the JEE Main Information Brochure.

Qualifying Exam: Regardless of age, applicants can qualify if they have successfully completed their Class 12 or an equivalent examination. This includes various educational pathways such as a two-year Pre-University exam, Joint Services Wing of the National Defence Academy exam, senior secondary school examination, Higher Secondary Certificate Vocational Examination, Intermediate or two-year Pre-University examination, a diploma recognized by the AICTE or a State board, General Certificate Education (GCE) examination (London/Cambridge/Sri Lanka) at the Advanced (A) level, High School Certificate Examination of the Cambridge University, or International Baccalaureate Diploma of the International Baccalaureate Office, Geneva.

Year: Only candidates who passed the Class 12 or equivalent examination in 2021 and 2022 or those currently in the process of appearing for it in 2024 are eligible to participate in JEE Main 2024.

Qualifying Marks: There is no specified minimum pass percentage for JEE Main; however, applicants must successfully pass their Class 12 board or equivalent examinations.

Number of Attempts: Candidates have the opportunity to appear for the exam for up to three consecutive years.

Eligibility Criteria for JEE Main Paper 2 and 3

Total Attempts: The candidates can appear for JEE Main for three consecutive years.

  • The candidate must have secured 50% marks in Maths, Physics, and Chemistry and 50% aggregate marks in the qualifying examination.
  • Mathematics is compulsory for candidates applying for B.Arch./B.Planning courses.

JEE Main Reservation Criteria

The examination authority adheres to the reservation criteria set by the Government of India for admission allocation via JEE Main. All India ranks will be determined in accordance with the categorical reservation policy. The percentage reservations for different categories in JEE Main 2024 admissions are as follows:

  • OBC – NCL candidates: 27% reservation
  • SC candidates: 15% reservation
  • ST candidates: 7.5% reservation
  • PwD candidates: 5% reservation
  • GEN-EWS candidates: 10% reservation

JEE Main Exam Pattern

JEE Main Paper 1 encompasses Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, whereas Paper 2A includes Maths, Aptitude, and Drawing Tests. Paper 2B involves Mathematics, Aptitude, and Planning-based questions. Candidates have the flexibility to attempt the test in either one or both sessions. Similar to the previous year, there will be a total of 90 questions, with candidates having the opportunity to answer 75 questions. The total allocated marks for the exam are 300.

All the papers are conducted as entirely computer-based online tests, except for the offline pen and paper-based mode of the drawing section in Paper 2A. The exam duration for all three papers is 3 hours.

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E or B.Tech Courses)

Exam Format: Offline computer-based test where students must record their answers on pre-downloaded answer sheets.
Duration of Exam: 3 hours
Question Content: Topics will be drawn from Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.
Question Type: Includes objective-type multiple-choice questions and numerical-based questions.
The paper consists of 90 questions, with 20 in section A and 10 in section B. Candidates can answer a total of 75 questions (300 marks), with 20 in section A and 5 in section B for each subject - Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics.

JEE Main Paper 1 Marking Scheme

  • In contrast to previous years, Section B now features negative marking.
  • Correct answers earn 4 marks, but there is a deduction of 1 mark for each incorrect response, applicable to both MCQs and numerical-based questions.
  • Unanswered questions do not receive any marks.

JEE Main Paper 2A (B.Arch Courses)

  • Examination Format: Part-I assesses Mathematics, Part-II evaluates Aptitude in Computer-Based Test (CBT) mode, and Part-III involves a Drawing Test in "Pen and Paper" (offline) mode, to be completed on an A4-sized drawing sheet.
  • Duration: The exam lasts for 3 hours.
  • Mathematics Section: Comprising 20 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and 10 numerical value-based questions, candidates are required to attempt only 5 out of the 10 numerical-based questions.
  • Aptitude Section: Consisting of 50 MCQs.
  • Drawing Test: This section evaluates sketching and drawing skills and includes 2 questions.

JEE Main Paper 2B (B.Planning Courses)

  • Mode of Examination: Computer-based test.
  • Duration: The exam spans 3 hours.
  • Structure: Divided into three parts – Mathematics, General Aptitude, and Planning Skills.
  • Mathematics Section: Comprising 20 Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and 10 numerical value-based questions, candidates are required to attempt only 5 out of the 10 numerical-based questions.
  • Aptitude Section: Encompassing 50 questions.
  • Planning Section: Involving 25 questions, both sections are composed of MCQ-based questions.

JEE Main Paper 2B Marking Scheme

  • Each accurate response will receive 4 marks, and a deduction of 1 mark will be applied for each incorrect answer.
  • Negative marking of 1 mark applies to both Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs) and numerical-based questions.
  • No negative marking is imposed for unanswered questions.

Kindly note that all calculations and written work should be done solely on the designated Rough Sheet in the Test Center or Examination Room/Hall. Following the exam, candidates must hand over their rough sheets to the invigilator.

JEE Main Cutoff 2024

The National Testing Agency (NTA) will announce the JEE Main 2024 Cutoff and the Session 2 results. The Cutoff Marks are the minimum percentile scores that candidates must secure to be eligible for appearing in the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced. It is important to note that the JEE Main cutoff for different categories may vary.

Candidates must know that there is no minimum score required to pass the JEE Main exam. Rather, the score obtained in the exam is used to calculate their All India Rank, which is, in turn, used for determining their admittance into NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. The cutoff marks specified by JEE Main are only applicable for eligibility in the JEE Advanced examination.

JEE Main Counselling 2024

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) is responsible for organizing the counseling process for admission to IITs, NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs for JEE Main 2024. Candidates who have obtained a score in JEE Main must register for JoSAA counseling to be eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs, and GFTIs. Additionally, candidates who have appeared in JEE Advanced must register for JoSAA 2024 counselling to be eligible for admission to IIITs. JEE Main Participating Institutes

The colleges that take part in the JoSAA counselling for admission to various Engineering, Architecture, and Planning courses are known as JEE Main Participating Institutes. In addition to these institutes, there are other universities that offer admission based on JEE Main scores but are not included in the JoSAA counselling process. These institutions have their own respective admissions procedures.

There are a total of 31 National Institutes of Technology (NITs), 25 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and 19 other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs) participating in the JoSAA Counselling for admission. The number of seats available in each institute can be checked on the official website of JoSAA. In addition to these, there are also several other institutes offering admission based on JEE Main scores, which come from states that do not conduct their own entrance exams for engineering admission, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and others.
