How to become a Doctor in India?

Step 1: Figure out whether do you love Biology.

This is one of the initial and crucial StepStep for becoming a doctor. First, ask yourself whether you love biology? Did you love to examine human cells, tissues, organs, etc.? If you have a deeper chain of interest in biology, you have a clear idea about medical career options.

Step 2: Find out whether you have the potential.

Figuring out your possible means whether you have the capability or ability to become a doctor. You can merely examine your potential by taking the Career Assessment Aptitude test or Interest Aptitude Test. At Brainwonders, we assure you to make the right decision about your career. Through career assessment, you can discover whether your skills, abilities and personality are relevant to becoming a doctor.

Step 3: Take Science & Mathematics subjects in school

In India, upper primary (6 to 8th class) and secondary school (9th & 10th class) science subjects are already academic. If you love science and maths subjects, then its fine but you are average among these subjects you need to make sure that you should focus on improving these subjects. In secondary school, science subject basics are mentioned, which will help in science 11th & 12th class.

Step 4: Select Science background subject in 11th & 12th class

Of course, this doesn't need to be said. You'll need to keep Physics, Chemistry, and Biology in classes 11 and 12 for the next two years. This is a must! Additional subjects must be chosen carefully to keep the load down. If you don't want to take secondary language classes at your school, you can choose not to.

Step 5: Apply for the relevant entrance exams after the 12th board.

Every student wishes to get admission into prestigious medical institutes. So the students are required to crack the NEET (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test). So you also dream of getting admission among the top medical universities; you need to crack the NEET exam with an excellent score.

NEET is the only centralized national level exam for MBBS, BDS (Dental Sciences) and alternative medicine graduate-level courses. With effect from the academic year 2020, admission to AIIMS (New Delhi), MBBS programmes at AFMC (Pune), JIPMER (Pondicherry), and all other medical INIs (Institutes of National Importance) would also be made through NEET.

Basic Study Path to Become an MBBS and Then a Super Specialist Doctor or Surgeon

Step 1: Class 10th with Science and Maths subjects

We have already discussed why science and maths are beneficial for the 10th class.

Step 2: Class 11-12th Science with BiPC (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry) subjects

To become a doctor, you need to have the right information about the fundamentals of science subjects, which also play a prominent role in preparation for the NEET exam.

Step 3: MBBS

After you are done with steps 1 & 2, step 3 is a popular alternative to obtain the MBBS degree. There are also other options apart from MBBS like:

  • BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery)
  • BSMS (Bachelor of Siddha Medicine & Surgery)
  • BUMS (Bachelor of Unani Medicine & Surgery)
  • BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurveda, Medicine, & Surgery)
  • BHMS (Bachelor of Homeopathic Medicine & Surgery)

You will become a doctor after pursuing a 5.5 year-long graduation degree. Nowadays, the competition is steep at an augmenting rate, so you need to train yourself in some super speciality. The next step elaborates on you specializing in a specific area of interest.

Step 4: Junior Residency (MS/MD/DNB)

This StepStep is about going for postgraduate medical education. This can be done in two ways: Diploma or Master's Degree.

  1. A diploma will be of 2 years after MBBS.
  2. PGMedical education is of 3-year duration degree courses of MS(Master of Surgery)/MD (Medicine Doctor) after MBBS.
  3. Instead of MS/MD, which you pursue in government hospitals, you can opt for DNS (Diplomate of National Board), which you will pursue in private hospitals.

Step 5: Senior Residency (DM/M Ch/ FNB)

  1. DM and M Ch degrees follow MD and MS. Doctors have DM, and surgeons have M Ch. Super-specialties are subjects at this level. This StepStep is not possible after MBBS.
  2. If you did DNB following MBBS, you could do super-speciality training through "FNB" (Fellow of National Board). FNB is DM/M Ch.
  3. By the time you finish your DM, MCh or FNB, you will have had at least 8 years of practice, first as a junior resident (3 years during your MD/MS or DNB), then as a senior resident (3 years during DM/MCh/FNB) and 1 year between your MBBS and MD/MS or DNB.
