Basic Eligibility Requirement for Railway Jobs in India

The Indian Railway services are categorised into two cadres – technical and non-technical. They are further divided into 4 groups – Group A, Group B, Group C, and Group D.

Among these groups, groups A and B are the official cadre posts. The engineering, medical, and officials fall under groups A and B. The Union Public Commission conducts the exams for group A. There is also a Special Class Railway Apprenticeship Examination (SCRA) conducted separately for students interested in getting into the Railway sector right after 12th. Group C comprises staff positions like clerks, supervisors, and skilled labour. Group D consists of unskilled labour. The Railway Recruitment Board conducts all these groups. 

Eligibility Criteria for Group Railway Jobs

Group A

One can apply for Group A posts if one has completed a bachelor's degree in Engineering, Medical science or any other relevant stream. For SCRA, the main eligibility criteria is HSC with PCM. In order to get to apply for group A positions, one has to first fit into the age requirement criteria. 

Group B

One cannot apply for the group B posts; group B has no exam because the group B officials are directly promoted from Group C by the railway board. When there has been a specific time for which the employee has been serving in group C, then he/she is promoted to group B.

Group C

For group C, the eligibility is 10th for the ALP or technician; if the individual has completed 12th, he/she can apply for ticket collector, and if completed the graduation, he/she might be assigned as the Assistant Station Master. The eligibility age ranges from 30-33 years, depending upon the person's social status. 

Group D

This group consists of porters, trackmen, gatemen, etc. Group D railway job positions are advertised or displayed on the website of the Railway Recruitment Committee and across all the main national newspapers.

Railway Jobs after MBBS

RRB NTPC Exam Pattern

The procedure of selection of RRB NTPC includes 4 stages: 

Stage 1 is a Computer based entrance test. The test consists of 2 hours. There are a total of 100 questions, categorised into 30 questions of maths, 30 questions of reasoning, and 40 questions of general awareness. 

Stage 2 is again a Computer based entrance test with the same duration of 2 hours but different questions. There are a total of 120 questions, divided into 35 questions of maths, 35 of reasoning and 50 of general awareness. 

Stage 3 is Typing skill test for the post of Junior Accounts Assistant, Account Clerk, and Senior Clerk. Here, the eligibility to clear the test is to type 30 words per minute in English or 25 words per minute in Hindi. Marks of typing skills are not considered for making merit. 

Stage 4 is the final stage of document verification and medical testing. Based on the aggregate score of the Computer based test, the qualifying candidates will be called further for the medical examination as well as for document verification.
